PRESIDENTS UPDATE - March 2026
Hi all,
Welcome to the 2026 rugby season. We are all set to go at Power House with over 100 players training hard through the pre-season. We have once again entered 7 teams into the competition (with a possibility of an 8th with a second women’s team) – the most by a senior club – and are welcoming new players every session. Our under 85 kgs have started their premiership defence strongly, unbeaten through 4 rounds and into the grand final next week. Keep your eyes on our social channels for details of the match.
There has been a lot of discussions within Victorian rugby on the structure of the Dewar Shield. Rugby Victoria instituted a review following the lop-sided results from last year across all grades. A number of different models were suggested with the prevailing view that Victorian rugby needs to move to divisional rugby with a promotion/relegation process. However the method of getting to that structure has caused much consternation. The competition has landed with a 10 team first round with all teams playing each other once. From there the top 5 teams will form the Dewar Shield (Division 1) and the next 5 teams will form Ward Shield (Division 2). Those teams will play each other once more before finals start in each of the Divisions. Reserve grade will count for 50% of the points when determining the top 5 clubs so depth will be important. Whilst this new format will take some time to get used to it does give all clubs the chance to prove they should be in the top division of rugby in Victoria and hopefully leads to competitive matches with so much to play for.
Our season launch is on Thursday 26 March at Bells Hotel. Everyone is welcome and it’s a great chance to reconnect after the summer break. Our players, coaches and committee will be in attendance so please do come down. Bells Hotel is one of our many sponsors and I want to thank all new and returning sponsors for getting on board in 2026. A special mention to our major sponsor QMC and their founder Scott Davidson who continues to support our club across our men’s and women’s program.
In 2026 we are aiming even higher than our previous wildly successful seasons. In Dewar Shield we are going for a 3 peat and to replicate the teams from 2006-2008. Fittingly the 2006 premiership team will be celebrating their 20 year reunion this season and it would be great if this year’s team could honour them with another premiership. Our other teams will be searching for more silverware and the Club (with our Junior Club in Newport) is hellbent on bringing home the Club Championship Award; something that has eluded us the last few years.
There is no better time to come on board as a member – either social or as a Coronet Club member. Our Coronet Club has a fundraising goal of $3,000 to pay for our brand new marquee which will sit proudly on our sidelines. Please jump online and join up as either a Gold Member ($500) or a Silver Member ($250). The link can be found below via the button.
As many of you are aware 2026 is shaping up to be a milestone year for the Club when our long awaited brand new club rooms are finally delivered. I’m pleased to let you know that construction is going well and we remain on track for a July 2026 opening. Years of hard work has gone into fundraising for the club rooms and the project team is working hard to ensure that what we deliver will serve Power House for years to come. To add off field excellence to our brilliant on field performances will mean our Club will be leading the way on growing rugby in Victoria.
I look forward to seeing you on the sidelines or at our season launch.
Crowns Up
